A special veterinary health and awareness camp was held at Kalankarai village near Thoothukudi on Monday, organised by the Department of Animal Husbandry.
Thoothukudi Collector Vishu Mahajan presided over the programme and inaugurated the camp.
He said that during the current financial year, special veterinary health and awareness camps would be conducted in 216 selected village panchayats across 12 panchayat unions in Thoothukudi district from September 2026 , at the rate of three camps in a month in each panchayat union.
He added that the camps will provide various veterinary health services free of cost, including treatment for sick livestock, mastitis management, deworming, vaccination against diseases, artificial insemination, infertility treatment, pregnancy diagnosis and other minor surgical procedures.
Livestock requiring emergency or advanced treatment will be referred to nearby veterinary hospitals and veterinary polyclinics. The animals requiring continued treatment for surgical procedures, specialised obstetric care and infertility would be identified during the camp and provided with follow-up treatment cards.
He added that to ensure timely and proper treatment, disease diagnosis, detection of worm infestation and antibiotic sensitivity test for mastitis would be carried out in the camps by officers from the veterinary disease investigation unit and samples requiring advanced treatment would be sent to university laboratories.
Highlighting that as part of the extension activities of the special camps, calf rallies would also be organised, he said that prizes would be awarded to the owners of three best calves based on body weight and overall health.
The collector urged the livestock farmers to make use of the opportunity by bringing their animals to the villages where camps would be conducted between September 2026 and February 2027.
