Srikakulam District Congress Committee president Sanapala Annaji Rao on Friday alleged that the names of thousands of migrant labourers were eliminated from the voters’ list during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) undertaken by the Election Commission of India, demanding the restoration of voting rights of those people whose names have been removed.
Nearly five lakh people were working in different parts of the country, and they come to their hometowns during festivals and elections, he said while addressing a gathering at the Gandhi Jayanti event.
“Srikakulam district is known for migrant labourers. They have not shifted permanently to other places. They give top priority to their voting rights and come back to native places during local body and general elections. It is unfair to delete names without providing any scope to submit relevant forms to the officials,” Mr. Rao said, adding that DCC would continue its week-long agitation programmes against the CEC decision, following the call given by AICC leadership.
