Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday inaugurated the restored Victoria Public Hall, located between Chennai Central Railway Station and the Ripon Buildings.
The work to restore the hall began in 2023 under the Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative, with a budget of ₹32.62 crore.
Mr. Stalin formally opened the hall by cutting the ribbon and went on to view the photo exhibits on the ground floor, which consists of three halls.
It showcases the inception and architecture of the hall, prominent speakers who had addressed gatherings there, the birth of the Justice Party in the landmark building, the theatre exhibits relating to Suguna Vila Sabha, and details of the restoration process.
Sangam instruments
About 120 musical instruments that were used in the Sangam period were also lined up, including the tutari, kuzhal, kinnaram, kokkarai and several others.
Outside the hall, exhibits portraying Chennai’s mobility history through rickshaw models and trams, along with exhibits on the roots of Tamil civilisation from Pallavaram to Keezhadi were displayed.
Dance performance
A traditional dance performance depicting the stories and speeches once hosted at the hall was also staged at the inaugural function, which was conducted in the upper hall set for cultural activities.
Architect felicitated
Mr. Stalin also felicitated principal architect Abha Narain Lambah and Ram Savani, Managing Director of Savani Heritage Conservation for bringing the project to a successful fruition.
