Around 145 school and college students visited the Kodumanal archaeological excavation site in Perundurai taluk on Friday (October 9, 2026) as part of an educational tour led by Collector S. Kandasamy.

The tour was organised by the Erode district administration and the Department of Archaeology to create awareness among students about the importance of archaeological sites and monuments and the need to preserve and maintain them.

Kodumanal is an ancient settlement that flourished during the Sangam period as an industrial and commercial centre. Archaeological excavations at the site have unearthed evidence of the lifestyle of ancient people, bead-making, the use of metals such as iron, jewellery-making and trade links. These findings highlight the antiquity of Tamil civilisation, technological knowledge and commercial skills of the people of that period.

The educational tour provided students with an opportunity to learn about history beyond their textbooks and gain first-hand understanding of ancient Tamil civilisation, culture and traditional technologies. The initiative also aimed to create awareness among students about the importance of preserving archaeological sites and monuments for future generations and to enhance their historical knowledge and research aptitude. The students also participated in a training programme organised by the Department of Archaeology on the preservation of archaeological sites.
