Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) Vice-Chancellor Tata Narasinga Rao has urged the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into geography education to keep pace with emerging technologies.
Mr. Narasinga Rao was delivering the inaugural address at the XX International Geography Conference on ‘Geospatial technologies in water and soil resource management for sustainable development and Viksit Bharat’, organised by Deccan Geographical Studies, India (DGSI) and SVU’s Department of Geography, here on Monday.
Mr. Narasinga Rao called for integration of AI-based applications into the curriculum and equipping students with skills in AI-driven analysis, 3D mapping, spatial modelling, predictive analytics and satellite data interpretation to ensure global competitiveness and professional relevance.
He also spoke on the growing importance of geospatial technologies in addressing contemporary challenges like water scarcity, soil degradation, climate change and sustainable resource management.
Central University of South Bihar Vice-Chancellor Kameshwar Nath Singh, in his keynote address, explained how the geographical studies had transformed from the traditional geospatial approaches to geospatial AI-based interdisciplinary frameworks. He said that such an integration was essential for realising ‘Viksit Bharat’ and ensuring food security through scientific management of soil and water resources.
DGSI President Dipendra Nath Das underscored the urgent need for effective management of natural resources to ensure food security, in view of the ever-increasing population, while stressing the need to align individual responsibility with community aspirations in addressing environmental and developmental challenges.
DGSI Secretary General B.C. Vaidya expressed hope that the ‘young India’ would play a crucial role in realising Viksit Bharat by effectively applying the relevant technologies needed for natural resource management.
SVU Registrar M. Bhupathi Naidu, SVU College Development Council Dean and event convener N. Chendrayudu also spoke.
