South Western Railway (SWR) recorded its highest-ever freight loading for September, handling 4.41 million tonnes during the month, a 5.9% increase over the 4.17 million tonnes loaded in September 2025.
According to a press release issued by SWR, the September performance took SWR’s cumulative originating freight loading during April-September 2026 to 26.1 million tonnes, an increase of 5.8% over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Iron ore accounted for the largest share of freight loading during September at 1.7 million tonnes, followed by pig iron and finished steel at 1.127 million tonnes and coal at 0.9 million tonnes. Mineral oil loading stood at 0.217 million tonnes, while container traffic accounted for 0.105 million tonnes.
During the first six months of the financial year, iron ore loading stood at 10.17 million tonnes, followed by pig iron and finished steel at 5.95 million tonnes and coal at 5.36 million tonnes.
SWR reported gross revenue of ₹870 crore in September, an increase of 15.91% over September 2025. Passenger revenue rose 26.87% to ₹357.5 crore, while passenger traffic increased 6.83% to 1.5 crore.
Freight revenue during the month stood at ₹465 crore, an increase of 8.72% over the corresponding month last year. Other coaching revenue rose 10.51% to ₹28.81 crore, while parcel revenue increased 10.35% to ₹15.89 crore.
Cumulatively, SWR’s gross revenue during April-September reached ₹4,730 crore, up 4.91% over the previous year. Passenger revenue stood at ₹1,904.10 crore, while freight revenue is ₹2,546 crore. The zone carried 9.2 crore passengers during the period, registering a 4.78% increase.
SWR general manager P. Ananth congratulated railway officers and employees for the performance in freight loading and revenue generation, the release said.
