CPI(M)’s T.M. Sasi was elected president of the Palakkad district panchayat on Saturday. N. Saritha, also from CPI(M), was elected vice-president.
Mr. Sasi defeated United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate K.G. Eldo, while Ms. Saritha emerged victorious over UDF’s Rafeeqa Parakkot.
Left Democratic Front (LDF) has 19 members and UDF 12 in 31-member district panchayat.

Mr. Sasi, a native of Mudappallur, was elected to the district panchayat for the first time. He currently serves as a member of the CPI(M) district secretariat.
Ms. Saritha is the district treasurer of the All India Democratic Women’s Association.

District Collector M.S. Madhavikutty administered the oath of office to Mr. Sasi. Speaking after taking charge, he acknowledged the huge responsibility entrusted to him and sought the support of his colleagues, the opposition, and CPI(M) leaders to carry out development initiatives effectively.
