Teen with rare blood disorder undergoes stem cell transplant with CSR support

A 12-year-old girl from Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh underwent stem cell transplantation at a hospital in Coimbatore for Fanconi anaemia, a rare inherited blood disorder leading to bone marrow failure.

The girl underwent an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital with her three-year-old younger sister as the matched sibling donor.

The girl, whose family is currently staying in Ernakulam for employment purposes, had been experiencing a progressive decline in her blood cell counts and required repeated blood transfusions. Detailed evaluation confirmed Fanconi anaemia with bone marrow failure, for which a team of doctors at GKNM Hospital performed the allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

“Fanconi anaemia is a rare inherited disorder in which progressive bone marrow failure can result in a severe reduction in blood cell production”, said Ajeitha L., consultant, Paediatric Haematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, GKNM Hospital.

The Hans Foundation covered the full cost toward the child’s bone marrow transplant and associated treatment.
