In the wake of recent major and fatal fire accidents within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits, the Telangana Fire, Disaster Response, Emergency and Civil Defence Department has begun intensive inspections of buildings in the area to check fire and life safety compliance.
The drive was ordered by Director General of Fire Services Vikram Singh Mann, who instructed officials to carry out inspections on a war footing, focusing on violations that pose an imminent risk to occupants. These include the misuse of cellars for purposes other than parking such as storage or accommodation, blocked staircases and ramps, and the storage of large quantities of materials beyond permitted display or sample requirements.
The inspections of vulnerable establishments within the ORR limits commenced on January 28. So far, 70 establishments of various categories have been checked. These include three institutional buildings, two hospitals, three mixed occupancy buildings, 26 commercial establishments, 27 mercantile establishments, three assembly occupancies, two business buildings, one residential building, one industrial unit, one multiplex and one mall.
Officials have been directed to take strict action against management if lapses are found. Building owners and operators have been asked to ensure full compliance with fire safety codes, including the proper functioning of fire safety systems, extinguishers and sprinklers installed on their premises.
Fire officials are also issuing fire safety precautionary advice to owners, tenants and employees during the inspections. Mr.Mann has appealed to all stakeholders to strictly follow fire safety guidelines and prescribed norms.
