Tiruchi Corporation has invited tenders to build a bus terminus in Tiruverumbur on the Tiruchi-Thanjavur National Highway, catering to both city and mofussil buses.
A sum of ₹6.20 crore has been sanctioned under the 6th SFC – Grants for Tourism Towns 2024-25 & 2025-26 for the project, which is to be built on an acre of land near the existing bus stand and will serve as a transit hub for the added wards.
According to sources, the civic body has paid ₹2.5 crore to the district administration for acquiring the land on the premises of the Tiruverumbur old panchayat union office. In addition to the development of bus bays, a commercial complex and amenities, including cloakrooms and sanitation facilities, are planned. The project would be completed within two years from the commencement of work.
According to the tender notification, the last date for submission of proposals will be January 2. The project work is expected to commence over the next few months after the contract is awarded to the successful bidder. Officials say they expect to launch the preliminary work before the enforcement of the model code of conduct for the Assembly elections in 2026.
A new bus stand at Tiruverumbur has been a long-pending demand from the residents. The project was proposed earlier in 2024; however, it was delayed owing to challenges in finalising the land.
