Tension prevailed in Kadiri town in Sri Sathya Sai district on Tuesday following the death of a pregnant woman and stillborn baby at a private hospital. The incident triggered protests by relatives and local residents.
The deceased, Harini Kumari (22), a native of Javakal village in the neighbouring N.P. Kunta mandal, 30 km from Kadiri, was admitted to a private hospital in the early hours, after she developed labour pains.
Alleging medical negligence, family members and locals from their native village staged a sit-in protest outside the hospital, demanding strict action against those responsible and also cancellation of the hospital’s licence. The activists of the Left parties extended support to the protest. Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the Kadiri Circle-Inspector (CI) told the media that the woman’s husband, Obul Reddy, stated in a written complaint that doctors informed the family that the foetus had already died in the womb and was delivered through a normal procedure. He said his wife later developed severe breathlessness and died. The family subsequently said that they were satisfied with the explanation and did not seek legal action, following which no case was registered.
