Tiruchi Corporation has prepared a model layout for proposed safe shelters to accommodate sterilised stray dogs.
A recent city-wide survey has estimated the number of stray dogs within the city limits at 43,767. Of these, 29,972 dogs have been sterilised while 34,972 have been administered anti-rabies vaccination, an official press release said.
As per the Supreme Court directive, stray dogs roaming public locations, including 227 government offices and educational institutions, 63 government hospitals, 208 private hospitals, three bus stands, and five railway stations, are to be removed from those premises. After sterilisation, the dogs will be sheltered and provided with necessary food and care at the proposed safe shelters.
The shelters, equipped with all necessary facilities, will be constructed near the four Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres at Srirangam, Ariyamangalam, Ponmalai, and Abishekapuram. The project is estimated to cost ₹1.20 crore and construction is expected to commence shortly.
Meanwhile, the Corporation has ensured that adequate stock of medicines required for dog-bite treatment are maintained at all urban primary health centres, which are providing services round the clock. In addition, all government and private hospitals have displayed notice boards containing details, including the name and contact number of the nodal officer responsible for dog-bite treatment.
Under the National Rabies Control Programme, special treatment cards have been issued to patients undergoing treatment for dog bites. Vaccinations are being administered as per protocol on the day of the bite, followed by doses on the third, seventh, and 28th day, the release added.
