Tirunelveli Corporation Commissioner inspects drinking water pumping stations

Corporation Commissioner Monika Rana on Saturday inspected a pumping station, allied overhead tanks and distribution systems here to ascertain the quantum of drinking water being supplied to consumers.

The inspection comes after the Corporation Council meeting on Friday witnessed a barrage of complaints from Councillors about poor supply of drinking water to residents in their wards,

Dr. Monika visited the Suththmalli drinking water pumping station, a major supply system of Tirunelveli Corporation, and asked officials to clear the sand that had accumulated around three of the eight infiltration wells, preventing effective percolation of water into the wells.

She also inspected the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system monitoring the quantity of water being pumped from the infiltration wells to overhead tanks located in southern parts of the city.

When the Commissioner saw leakage of drinking water from pipes carrying water, she directed the the officials to attend to all the leakage points immediately and submit a compliance report by Sunday.

She alsi visited the overhead tank at Raja Nagar near Melapalayam roundabout, which supplies drinking water to wards 31, 43 to 46, 49, 50 and 52, to understand the supply as a couple of councillors heaped complaints about poor drinking water supply from this water tank. After ensuring the quantum of supply, she also personally tested the chlorination content of water.

“If the water is supplied without due chlorination, which may trigger outbreak of water-borne diseases, those responsible for dereliction of duty will have to face music,” Dr. Monika warned.

When she came to know that an illegal structure built on a storm water drain in Xavier Colony would obstruct the flow of rainwater into Vaeinthaankulam during the ensuing northeast monsoon, Dr. Monika visited the spot and issued eviction notice.

“The encroacher should immediately remove the illegal structure on his own. Else, remove it and collect the eviction cost from the encroacher,” she said.
