Tirunelveli Corporation converts 921 tonnes degradable waste into manure in 4 months

The Corporation has converted 921 tonnes of degradable waste into manure in the past and sold around 19 tonnes of this natural micro nutrient to the public and the farmers to be used in homestead gardens and ranches, Commissioner Monika Rana has said.

Dr. Monika, while inspecting the collection of degradable, non-degradable and hazardous wastes separately from the residents of Vannarpet in ward 9 of Tirunelveli Corporation on Thursday, said intensive awareness programmes were being organised in residential areas, schools and colleges to tell the public about the need for handing over the waste separately after segregating it in the houses itself.

If the residents separate the wastes based on its nature and hand it over to the sanitary workers, it will be easy for the Corporation to convert the degradable waste into manure and give the same back to the public at a rate of ₹5 per Kg.

“Since we’ve established good number of micro compost centres at various parts of the Corporation for converting the degradable waste into manure, the residents should cooperate with us so that we can supply them the high quality, chemical-free manure for their homestead organic garden at just ₹5 a Kg,” Dr. Monika said.

The Commissioner informed that 921.39 tonnes of degradable waste has been converted into manure in the past four months and 18.91 tonnes of manure has been sold to the public and the farmers.

“If you separate the waste at source and give it to us, we’ll nourish your trees and vegetable plants of your home with chemical-free nutrients,” she said.

After inspecting the segregation of garbage, Dr. Monika checked surprisingly the water tanks in a few houses as part of the ongoing anti-dengue operation.
