Additional monitoring needed
The Tenkasi forest department’s eco-friendly regulations for tourists visiting the Old Courtallam waterfalls is a commendable move to protect local wildlife and their habitat. However, along with such restrictive guidelines, monitoring of tourists are also needed to reduce the effect of man-made factors on a vulnerable ecosystem.

Waste menace
Unregulated waste dumping on the banks of Mootharkulam, near Kottaram Government Hospital poses threat to nearby healthcare facility and residential areas. Both the members of the public and local body, dump solid waste on the bund and set it ablaze. Adding to the menace, poultry and tender coconut shell wastes are regularly dumped at the site. The authorities concerned may take measures to manage solid waste.

Preference for senior citizens
All the banks including private, commercial and cooperative banks must arrange for easier disbursal of cash and other banking services for senior citizens, as they are often unable to stand in long queues due to age and other health problems.

Laudable initiative
Thoothukudi forest department’s efforts to ensure the availability of water for wildlife at Vallanadu Blackbuck Sanctuary is a laudable initiative. Besides quenching the thirst of wild animals, the project could prevent blackbuck when they wander out of protected forest areas in search of food and water.

Learning support
This refers to news in The Hindu, highlighting that Kanniyakumari and Tirunelveli districts secured the third and fourth rank in pass percentage of Class XII public examination results. The methodology adopted by Tirunelveli CEO Sivakumar is commendable. The CEO recognised the need of students and provided additional support to slow learners. Along with this, parents also played an active role in this process.
The successful model should be implemented in all government schools, which will help the average students to reach greater heights.
