Tirupati police arrested 13 people on Wednesday for the abduction and assault of two student union leaders.
It may be recalled that student leaders Ali Akbar and Vinod Kumar, who were about to participate in a demonstration against Mohan Babu University (MBU), were allegedly abducted by some persons owing allegiance to the university, on Tuesday.
After protests by the Left party leaders and members of Andhra Pradesh Parents Association, police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Additional Superintendent of Police K. Ravi Manoharachary told the media that preliminary investigation revealed the alleged involvement of ‘bouncers’ and staff belonging to the university.
After rescuing the victims, the police arrested Ravuru Satheesh (PRO of MBU), K. Surendra, P. Rajesh, P. Janaki Ram, Ch. Badrinadh, L. Muni Chandra, C. Surendra, P. Hemanth, N. Vasudeva, A. Muni Teja, C. Krishna Chaitanya, P. Vishesh and M. Dwaraka Sai Prathap, who were allegedly behind the attack.
“The absconding among the accused will be arrested soon and special teams have been formed for the hunt”, he said.
Meanwhile, the university has also registered a case against the union leaders, accusing them of blackmailing administration officials.
Superintendent of Police (SP) L. Subbarayudu warned that the bouncers meant for personal protection should not be misused for attack on common public.
