Transport Secretary L. Nirmal Raj reviewed here on Friday the preparations being made for the official launch of ‘Vetri Payanam’, a welfare scheme to be introduced for free bus rides for women passengers even in mofussil buses.
During his interaction with the officials of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) here, Mr. Nirmal Raj gave instructions for the smooth launch and successful implementation of the welfare programme.
After this discussion, he visited the Vaeinthankulam new bus-stand along with Collector Anand Mohan to ascertain the facilities there as mofussil buses are being operated from here and the maintenance of the bus terminus by Tirunelveli Corporation.
Managing Director of TNSTC, Tirunelveli Division, K. Selvam, general manager T. Mohan Kumar and others were present during the inspection.
When the Collector saw a few shops had encroached upon the platforms by keeping the utensils, stove and snack trays and thereby creating hurdles to the passengers, he ordered the sealing of these shops.
Subsequently, the Corporation officials, led by Assistant Commissioner of Melapalayam Zone D. Chandramohan sealed shops 97, 102 and 116.
They also instructed the traders of Vaeinthankulam new bus-stand to keep their properties within their shops and made it clear that any encroachments made on the platform would lead to the sealing of the shops besides confiscating the utensils kept on the platforms. Above all, the lease would be cancelled, the official said.
