Trash piles grow bigger along bypass between Mathur and Panjapur

Heaps of garbage are becoming bigger along the bypass road that links Mathur on Tiruchi-Pudukottai national highway and Panjapur on the Tiruchi-Madurai national highway, potentially endangering the water bodies and general environment in the area.

The boom in real estate projects in the tracts of land behind the Panjapur integrated bus terminal has led to an increased number of commercial and residential layouts on the bypass. However solid waste management is still patchy in the area. As a result, the verges of the bypass road are cluttered with discarded materials from the nearby homes and shops.

The bypass is a crucial link road between Panjapur and Mathur and the vehicular traffic is comparatively low here.

When contacted, a senior Corporation official told The Hindu that the parties concerned in the localities near the bypass had been advised to stop dumping their trash on the roadside.

“We are planning to request the Highways Department for permission to erect fences on both sides of the bypass, which will deter the public from throwing their garbage on the empty stretches of land here. The Corporation has been monitoring the issue at regular intervals,” the official said.
