Turmeric prices are nearing ₹19,000 a quintal in Erode amid a decline in arrivals, bringing cheer to farmers.
Turmeric from Erode and neighbouring districts is sold through auctions at the regulated markets in Karumandichellipalayam and Semmampalayam near Perundurai, and at the Erode and Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Societies. Auctions are held from Monday to Friday, except on government holidays. The regulated markets at Chithode and Thalavadi also conduct auctions, attracting traders from within and outside the State.
Between 1,000 and 6,000 bags are sold daily through the two regulated markets and two cooperative societies, depending on arrivals. Erode turmeric, which has a geographical indication (GI) tag, is known for its quality and is exported to several countries.
Prices had touched ₹20,000 a quintal in 2024 before declining with increased arrivals. In July this year, finger turmeric fetched between ₹12,589 and ₹19,150 a quintal and bulb turmeric between ₹11,529 and ₹16,889 at the Erode regulated market.
Prices began recovering in September as arrivals declined and old stocks dwindled. On September 1, finger turmeric fetched a maximum of ₹17,529 a quintal at the regulated market. At Tuesday’s (October 6, 2026) auction at the Erode regulated market, finger turmeric fetched between ₹14,044 and ₹18,850 a quintal, while bulb turmeric was sold between ₹10,599 and ₹17,429.
Farmers said drought in the Lower Bhavani and Kalingarayan irrigation areas had prompted some growers to shift to alternative crops, reducing turmeric cultivation and arrivals. The availability of old stocks had also declined.
With Vijayadashami and Deepavali festivals approaching, demand could increase further, potentially pushing up prices, the farmers said.
