Two persons have been arrested in connection with dacoity in which a gang trespassed into a businessman’s house in Puzhal, threatened the occupants with knives, and decamped with cash worth ₹25 lakh, gold jewellery and silver articles.
According to police, the incident occurred in the early hours of January 30, at the residence of Vijayakumar, a resident of Mahaveer Garden Main Road, East Kavangarai in Puzhal. Vijayakumar runs a wholesale textile business in Manipur, and he has two daughters.
Police said that six unidentified men, wearing masks, caps and armed with knives, forcibly entered the house when Vijayakumar’s wife Vasantha was about to leave for her morning walk. The gang threatened Vasantha, her husband, their two daughters, and her mother-in-law at knifepoint, tied them with ropes, assaulted them and issued death threats. The robbers allegedly fled with ₹25 lakh cash kept in the house, 13 sovereigns of gold jewellery — including diamond-studded gold earrings, gold chains, bangles, bracelets and rings worn by Vasantha and her family members — and around 250 grams of silver pooja articles kept in the prayer room. The suspects escaped in a car.
Based on a complaint lodged by Vasantha at the Puzhal Police Station, a case was registered and an investigation was launched. Following a probe, a special team led by the Inspector of the Puzhal Police Station crime wing arrested two accused — Rahul, 28, of Ennore, and Praveenkumar, 28, of Puzhal. Two mobile phones, including an iPhone, were seized from them.
The arrested accused were produced before a court on Monday. Police said efforts are under way to trace and arrest the remaining suspects involved in the case.
