Two men were stabbed to death at Manippuram in Tirunelveli on Tuesday following a personal dispute between two families of the same community.
According to police, the deceased were identified as Dalton, 71, who runs a petrol bulk in Nellai Kannan Salai and his brother Nicolas Rajarathinam, 75.
The police said the accused, Senthil, 43, a resident of Manipuram, had gone to a temple in the area. At that time, a verbal altercation broke out between D. Narendran, 28, son of Dalton, reportedly over an issue concerning access to the temple. The verbal dispute escalated into a physical altercation, during which Senthil stabbed Dalton and Nicolas Rajarathinam.
Upon receiving the information, Tirunelveli junction police rushed to the spot. Dalton died while being taken to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital (TGMCH), while Nicolas succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
A case has been registered at Tirunelveli junction police station. Senthil, who also sustained injuries in the incident, is undergoing treatment at TGMCH under police watch. Further investigations are on.
