The government’s anti-drug campaign continues to gather pace in the State capital, with two people nabbed with alleged possession of nearly 100 g of MDMA in Thiruvananthapuram early Monday.
The operation follows the purported seizure of 105 g of MDMA from two persons at East Fort a day ago.
The Thiruvananthapuram City District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF) apprehended two people, identified as Ananthakrishnan of Sreekaryam and Thomas of Thumba near the Kovalam bypass junction. The duo were interepted while they were allegedly attempting to smuggle the contraband in a car.
According to the police, Ananthakrishnan is a history-sheeter with several criminal cases registered against him within the Sreekaryam police station limits.
The accused persons are suspected to have been transporting the contraband for sale in the Kazhakuttam and other areas surrounding Technopark.
When the suspects realised that they were being trailed, they allegedly attempted to flee and rammed their car into the police vehicle. The police team pursued the car and intercepted it to take both suspects into custody.
During the search, the police recovered a packet containing MDMA hidden inside the fuel tank lid of the car. Another packet was allegedly found concealed inside one of the accused’s shoes.
In the crackdown that took place at East Fort on Sunday, an excise squad arrested two people, identified as Akash of Kallambalam and Aravind of Chullimanoor, with alleged possession of 105 g of MDMA.
Official sources said that the contraband was allegedly brought to Thiruvananthapuram from Bengaluru and was being smuggled to Kollam. The duo arrived in Thiruvananthapuram by bus and were travelling on a two-wheeler towards Chullimanoor when they were apprehended.
The duo was allegedly planning to sell the narcotic substance among school and college students.
