The Tenkasi Forest Division has picked-up two persons for allegedly erecting illegal electric fence around their ranches to check wild animal invasion and snares in their fields to catch the wild animals.
According to District Forest Officer R. Rajmohan, surprise check was conducted at Ooththumalai near Alangulam on Monday following information about erection of illegal electric fence around the fields and snares in the ranches to catch the animals. As the illegal electric fence and snares were found in two ranches, two persons have been picked-up for interrogation.
âCausing injury or death of wild animals by erecting electric fences or snares, poaching of wild animals protected by Wildlife Protection Act 1972 will land the violators in serious trouble as they will be sentenced to imprisonment up to seven years. In this particular case, the owner of the land has also been cited as accused as he is also responsible for this unlawful activity. The power connection to this ranch will be snapped permanently,â said Dr. Rajmohan appealing to the farmers not to erect solar fences and the snares.
He appealed to the public to inform the forest department if they come to know about illegal electric fencing and poaching of wild animals.
