Two Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders from West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district were arrested in connection with the attack on the convoy of then BJP president J.P. Nadda six years ago, a senior officer said on Monday (September 21, 2026).
The accused, identified as Ripon Sheikh and Sanjib Mondal, were apprehended by Usthi Police Station personnel on Sunday (September 20, 2026), he said, adding that firearms were seized from their possession.
“During the investigation, the police found that the two were allegedly involved in the attack on Nadda’s convoy at Shirakol in South 24 Parganas on December 10, 2020,” the officer said.
The two men were known as “influential TMC leaders in the Magrahat Paschim area and also faced allegations of involvement in anti-social activities”, he said.
The two accused have been taken into police custody and are being questioned to establish their alleged role in the 2020 incident, he said.
Investigators are also trying to ascertain the source of the firearms seized from the accused, the officer said.
Mr. Nadda was travelling to Diamond Harbour for a BJP programme when his convoy came under attack near Shirakol.
Several vehicles of his convoy were damaged, and a few people accompanying the BJP leader were injured.
The incident had led to a major political controversy in West Bengal, with the BJP and the then ruling TMC trading allegations over the attack.
