Two persons were arrested by the Arakkonam Town police in Ranipet on Sunday (February 1, 2026) on charges of stealing two-wheelers, mostly from public places in Vellore, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai districts.

The police said the arrested persons were identified as K. Parameshwaran, 28, a native of Vellore, and S. Karthik, 37, a resident of Thiruninravur near Avadi. Initial inquiries revealed that the duo began stealing two-wheelers from crowded public places and temple festivals in these districts to evade public and police attention. Parameshwaran, who has worked as a helper at a mechanic workshop, then goes on to repair them or remove their spare parts.

Based on several complaints, Ranipet Superintendent of Police (SP), Ayman Jamal, formed special teams to nab the duo. They also analysed CCTV footage on the routes where two-wheelers were stolen at public events.

During surprise vehicle checks, a police team stopped the duo, who were on a two-wheeler, on the Arakkonam-Thakkolam Main Road. They gave contradictory statements that aroused suspicion.

The police said the duo targeted two-wheelers that were hastily parked by owners in public places. All two-wheelers belonged to the same motorcycle company, as the duo found it easier to resell them in the black market at high prices.

The stolen two-wheelers were kept hidden in thick bushes below a bridge, before they were resold without documents, mostly to agricultural workers and illegal arrack sellers in adjoining districts.

Each stolen two-wheeler was sold between ₹5,000 to ₹10,000, the police said.
