Services of fifty-six workers of VOC Port Authority canteen have been regularised, thanks to the 28-year-long legal battle taken-up by the CITU.
Seeking the regularisation of the services of 56 workers of the VOC Port Trust canteen, CITU’s P. Sampath filed a case in the Madras High Court in 1998. After the long-drawn legal battle that even reached the Supreme Court, the two-member Bench of Madras High Court gave its verdict in November last in favour of the 56 canteen workers.
The Court directed the VOC Port to regularise the services of the petitioner canteen workers from July 28, 1998.
As the CITU reminded the Port authorities in a sustained manner to implement the verdict, the management notified on Monday the order regularising the services of 56 workers that triggered celebrations on Tuesday.
Accompanied by their family members, the beneficiary workers thanked chairman of VOC Port Authority Sushanta Kumar Purohit, vice-chairman Rajesh Soundararajan, chairman of canteen committee and chief mechanical engineer Ganesan, Chief Finance Controller Praful Mitra and the CITU office-bearers with sweets and crackers.
