Members of the Tamil Nadu Village Administrative Officers Association observed a hunger strike here on Tuesday demanding the withdrawal of the new laws introduced in place of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The protesters gathered at Collectorate complex and condemned the Union government for changing the name of the MGNREGA scheme, reducing its funding, and diluting its core values.
Association district president Paramasivam said though the protest was organised condemning the Centre’s move on MGNREGA, they demanded basic facilities such as toilets for the Rural Development department officers.
Though several of them had worked for decades together, promotion a distant dream, he said. “The Tamil Nadu government should pass a Government Order (GO) mandating promotion of Village Administrative Officers to special grade officers.”
Vijayaramalingam, District President, Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association, Sivanupoovan, District Vice-President, Rural Development Pensioners Association, and Genista, Executive, Treasury Officers Association, spoke at the protest.
