The School Education Department plans to expand the ‘Vettri Palligal’ scheme, which provides special coaching and career guidance to Class 11 and 12 government school students preparing for competitive examinations such as JEE, NEET, CLAT and CUET, to all 15 educational blocks in Coimbatore district.
At present, eight government higher secondary schools in Mettupalayam, Ashokapuram, S.S. Kulam, Sulur, Thondamuthur, Kinathukadavu, Pollachi and Valparai are functioning as centres.
Students from government higher secondary schools in the vicinity of each centre also attend the programme. Special coaching is provided on Saturdays and Sundays, along with lunch for the participating students.
An official said over 400 government school students appeared for various national-level competitive entrance examinations during the previous academic year, including the Common Law Admission Test, Joint Entrance Examination Main and Advanced, and several other entrance examinations.
The Education Department has selected seven more government higher secondary schools to function as centres. With this, the programme is proposed to be extended to all 15 educational blocks in the district.
