The Beach Road stretch from Park Hotel Junction to NTR Statue will remain closed for vehicles from 8 p.m. on December 31 to 5 a.m. on January 1, in view of New Year celebrations, the City Police said in a release on Tuesday.

The middle lane on BRTS Road stretches from Hanumanthawaka Junction to Adavivaram, Gosala to Vepagunta, Pendurthi to Convent Junction via NAD Junction. Emergency vehicles can ply on the service road.

The middle lane of BRTS Road between Maddilapalem Junction to Rama Talkies and Underpass near RTC Complex will also remain closed. The police said that the Telugu Thalli flyover would remain closed for vehicles during the same period.

The police said that the decision was taken as Beach Road is expected to witness heavy crowd on the New Year eve.

“Strict action will be taken against those who harass women on the pretext of extending New Year greetings or by using obscene and abusive language. Criminal cases will be registered and such offenders will be arrested,” Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi said.

Drone cameras will be deployed to maintain strict surveillance on the beach and its nearby areas. Bursting firecrackers is strictly prohibited on the beach. Visitors will not be allowed to enter the water at night, Mr. Bagchi said and appealed to the denizens to remain alert about the chain snatchers in crowded areas.

‘She Teams’ will be deployed in and around Novotel Hotel Junction, RK Beach, Bheemunipatnam, Gajuwaka, and Pendurthi. Women facing inconvenience are requested to approach the ‘She Teams’ for assistance, he said.

The Police Commissioner said that multiple teams are being deployed to check drunken driving in the city on the New Year eve.

Driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol may attract a fine of ₹10,000 or imprisonment for up to six months or both. Apart from this, the driving licence will be suspended for three months or more, or may even be permanently cancelled.

Minors are prohibited from driving and in such cases, the responsibility will be fixed on the vehicle owners. The police will keep a check on youth driving two-wheelers by removing silencers, over-speeding, dangerous driving, and racing gangs, he added.
