Volunteers of Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan of Ramakrishna Mission cleaned Central Railway Station Road on Sunday during October’s cleanliness drive.

The drive was conducted in collaboration with Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. and the Swachh Mangaluru Foundation.

A black spot near the University College Library, on the station road, was cleared. As the road is frequently used by railway passengers, tourists, and the general public, the team removed unwanted banners, waste, dry leaves, and other debris. The initiative transformed a long-neglected and unhygienic road stretch into a cleaner and more welcoming public space.

A team of students from the Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy cleaned the pedestrian pathway along the station road. They removed posters and unwanted stickers from roadside walls, scrubbed away dirt and adhesive marks using brushes, and washed the walls with water, restoring a cleaner appearance.

The enthusiastic participation of young people was a major highlight of the campaign, with students from Canara College and the Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy joining as volunteers.

The cleanliness programme also included painting the cleaned walls. In the next phase, the volunteers will decorate the painted walls with Warli art. There is also a proposal to plant greenery along the roadside and transform the black spot into a green and aesthetically pleasing space, a release from the mission said.
