Ensuring proper waste management measures will be a priority area for the newly-formed council in Eloor municipality under the Left Democratic Front (LDF), according to its chairperson Laiji Sajeevan.

The intent was to continue with various projects initiated by the previous Left front-led council, she said on Monday (December 29, 2025). Ms. Sajeevan pointed out that a proposal to formulate an annual calendar of waste management–related activities would be placed before the council for approval. It would outline plans to step up existing waste management projects under the annual Plan Programme, she said.

The Eloor municipality achieved ‘waste-free’ status under the government’s ‘Malinyamuktha Keralam’ initiative in March 2025. It earned the status for its initiatives to ensure proper segregation, collection, and processing of non-biodegradable waste, as well as source-level management of food waste. The civic body achieved a 100% target in the collection of user fees from waste generators by deploying members of the Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) in all wards. They are involved in the doorstep collection of non-biodegradable waste.

Ms. Sajeevan said the focus would be on ensuring the scientific processing of waste generated in various wards. The civic body had earlier approved a bylaw to ensure the scientific collection and disposal of plastic waste, following a directive from the Department of Local Self-Governments to initiate steps to curb the plastic menace. The ‘Plastic Waste Management Bylaw’ specified the responsibilities of waste generators and the civic body in accordance with various environmental laws.
