Water from Mullaiperiyar dam was released into the 18th canal for irrigation of farmlands in six villages in Theni district, bringing relief to the farmers of the region.
Water from the dam will flow into the extension canal for irrigation. Officials said the release will recharge groundwater in 585 open wells across six villages and supply water to seven irrigation tanks in and around Devaram, Pottipuram, Rasingapuram, Silamalai, Melachokkanathapuram and Bodinayakkanur. In all, about 4,794.70 acres of farmland are expected to benefit, they said.
Public Works Department engineers and a large number of farmers from the 18th canal area participated in the event. PWD officials appealed to farmers to use the released water consciously and efficiently so that all beneficiaries in the area can be covered.
