Widespread rain is likely across Keralam for three days from Wednesday (September 23, 2026), influenced by the movement of a weather system formed over the Bay of Bengal towards the east coast of the country.
According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological department (IMD) on Tuesday, the well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Tuesday night.
Continuing its west-northwestward movement, the system is very likely to reach the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts and cross the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur as a deep depression from Wednesday night to the early hours of September 24.
The system, along with a trough extending from the southeast Arabian Sea to the cyclonic circulation associated with the depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, passing across Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh, is likely to strengthen rainfall activity over Keralam during the next three days.
Yellow alert
A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts on Wednesday, warning of isolated heavy rain, while five districts in northern Keralam have also been placed under a yellow alert for Thursday.
