A 29-year-old woman allegedly ended her life on the night of Sunday (February 8, 2026) following mental and physical harassment by her husband. The deceased, identified as Vemulapudi Jaya, lived in the Gullapalem neighborhood near the local fish market, according to police.
According to the police reports from the Malkapuram Station, the incident took place between 11 p.m. and 11.30 p.m. Jaya reportedly locked herself in her bedroom after a fight with her husband, Pattalu, and took the extreme step. Her father, Kanakaraju, rushed home around 1.30 a.m. after receiving the news.
The police said that Jaya’s husband, who works as a painter, was reportedly an alcoholic. Family members told the police that he would return home in an intoxicated state and pick up fights with his wife, questioning her character and fidelity.
Police suspect that a ‘petty quarrel’ earlier that night, fuelled by his drunken state and harassment, was the reason behind the 29-year-old woman’s extreme step. The couple have two children—a 5-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son, the police said in a release.
Acting on a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s father, the Malkapuram Police have registered case under various sections, and taken the accused into the custody.
