A 45-year-old woman who was stranded in the flooded Nagavalli river on Tuesday night has been saved in a joint rescue operation carried out by police, fire and revenue officials near Gottamangalapuram village in Srikakulam district.
The woman, identified as M. Chandramma, was trapped as incessant downpours caused water levels in local water bodies to surge rapidly. Cattle herders who were grazing livestock near the riverbanks first spotted Ms. Chandramma stranded amidst the swirling waters and immediately alerted local residents.
The surge in the river followed heavy rainfall battering parts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh under the influence of deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
Prompted by the alert, local authorities swung into action as the officials from three departments rushed to the site to mount a rescue mission. Utilising safety ropes, fire personnel navigated the turbulent currents to reach Ms. Chandramma. They successfully brought her across to the riverbank and reunited her with her family members, averting a potential tragedy.
Following the incident, local administration officials issued strict advisories urging residents in habitations along the riverbanks to remain vigilant and avoid venturing near swollen streams and rivers. District authorities stepped up precautionary measures, directing field officials to closely monitor low-lying areas, vulnerable structures, and rising water levels as weather systems continue to impact the region.
