Chamarajanagar Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Mona Roat launched the ‘Your Money, Your Right’ campaign on December 19 to refund the unclaimed funds lying in bank deposit accounts to the rightful owners.
Ms. Roat said the district administration will extend full cooperation in settling government accounts related to deposits that did not have any heirs.
Addressing the gathering at the Chamarajanagar Zilla Panchayat office, Meenakshi Ganju, general manager of Reserve Bank of India, Bengaluru, instructed bank officials to make sincere efforts to trace depositors and repay the amounts to original depositors or their nominees as applicable.
She also emphasised the need to bring deposits transferred to the Depositor Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF) back into the financial mainstream and thereby promote economic activity.
In Chamarajanagar, a total of 1,21,881 DEAF accounts remain pending, involving ₹30.51 crore in unclaimed deposits. So far, 208 accounts, amounting to ₹6.11 crore, have been settled by identifying the rightful owners.
Representatives of various banks were also present on the occasion.
