The Mahila Court on Wednesday sentenced a youth from Thanjavur district to 20 years rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl under the pretext of marriage.
The victim, hailing from the Vaiyampatti police station limits, was employed at a private cotton mill in Vellakoil. The accused, identified as A. Ezhin, 24, son of Azhagar from Orathanadu in Thanjavur district, was a co-worker at the same mill.
The accused befriended the minor girl and sexually assaulted her on May 11, 2021, after promising to marry her. Based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, the Vaiyampatti All Women Police registered a case against Ezhin under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was arrested on June 23, 2021, and remanded to judicial custody.
The court found Ezhin guilty and sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment. The judge also imposed a fine of ₹7,000 on the convict.
