The general body meeting of Zilla Parishad (ZP) was held under the auspices of Chairperson Jallipalli Subhadra and CEO P. Narayana Murthy at the ZP Meeting Hall in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday. District Collectors M.N. Harendhira Prasad (Visakhapatnam), Vijaya Krishnan (Anakapalli), Dinesh Kumar (ASR district) and ZPTCs and MPTCs participated in the meeting.
The meeting started with the felicitation of Pangi Karuna Kumari, who had participated in the Blind Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup. She was presented cricket kits worth ₹39,900 on behalf of the Zilla Parishad.
Later, the meeting unanimously approved the budget for 2025-26 financial year and the budget estimates for 2026-27. Anantagiri ZPTC Dasari Ganga Raju and Nakkapalli ZPTC Gosala Kushalamma condemned the registering of PD Act on CPI-M leader M. Appalaraju, who had supported the fishermen in their struggle against the establishment of the bulk drug park at Nakkapalli. They said it was unfortunate that the PD Act, which was supposed to be used against drug peddlers and hardcore criminals was used against a leader, who was fighting for the rights of the people. They also demanded immediate withdrawal of the case.
They also alleged that while eligible physically challenged persons were being denied pensions, ineligible persons were being granted the same. They demanded identification of the ineligible persons, irrespective of their party affiliations.
Paravada ZPTC Bora Sanyasi Raju expressed anguish at the growing pollution in Parawada mandal, and overloading of lorries, which was causing health problems among residents and motorists driving on the main road. Water and air contamination in Parawada was discussed in the Parliament, which indicates the gravity of the situation he said, and demanded fixation of a specific time for release of smoke (effluents) by industries in the area, as it was causing respiratory diseases among the people.
He alleged that every day around 200 lorries going to NTPC and Hinduja company were being overloaded, resulting in damage to the main roads and accidents on the road. He also alleged that the benamis of people’s representatives were operating these lorries due to which transport officials were shying away from taking action. He demanded action from the officials concerned on the issues raised by him.
