‘Kozhukkatta’ is among the snacks provided to children in Koyilandy schools
For more than 5,000 students in the schools under the Koyilandy municipality limits, missing breakfast is not an option. They have tasty food waiting for them at schools five days of the week.
The ‘Good Morning’ breakfast scheme of the municipality, wherein snacks are provided to the students every day during the 11 a.m. break, has entered its third year and is well appreciated by the students and the parents.
“We noticed that several students came to school straight from their tuition classes and often did not get time to eat breakfast. This started affecting their concentration and the ‘Good Morning’ project was designed as a remedy,” said Sudha Kizhakkeppatt, municipal chairperson.
‘Good Morning’ was designed under ‘Disha’, an education project for students from Classes 1 to 7 in 23 schools under the municipality.
₹20 lakh set aside
“We have entrusted a few Kudumbashree units located near each school to prepare snacks. Some are catering units, while some cook at home,” Ms. Kizhakkeppatt said, adding that the municipality has set aside ₹20 lakh for the project during its third year. The snacks include payasam, fried or steamed food items like ‘kozhukkatta’ and ‘ada’ on different days.
Ms. Kizhekkeppatt said that the project came out of the realisation that a healthy breakfast was an essential component for the mental and physical growth of the students. This ensures that they stay energetic throughout the day.
The third edition of the project was launched in an event on Thursday by the chairperson. Vice chairperson K. Sathyan presided. K. Laiju, the implementing officer of the project, besides chairpersons of various standing committees and other councillors were present.
