The Higher Education Department of the Tamil Nadu government will organise a biennial curriculum fair to study innovative practices in curriculum design and delivery.
As part of the fair, a five-member team of experts will review the current curriculum on various subjects offered by State universities and compare them with those in certain benchmark institutions nationally and internationally. The results would then be compiled in the form of a paper and presented at a workshop for validation and screening. The expert committee would comprise senior academicians and domain experts.
“We would document and publish the best practices followed by different universities and make them available to all State institutions as a knowledge resource,” said M.P. Vijayakumar, Vice-Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE). A G.O. issued early last month stated that the primary objective of the fair was to identify, recognise, and disseminate innovative practices in curriculum design and delivery, and promote inter-institutional collaboration and knowledge exchange. This would also provide a platform for teachers, students and scholars to contribute to the evolution of the curriculum.
Many institutions, the G.O. added, are likely to have embedded best practices in classroom transactions, student-centred pedagogies and assessment strategies. The fair would help in wider dissemination of these practices.
The subjects chosen for curriculum analysis this year are Physics, Zoology, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, Mr. Vijayakumar said.
The fair would be held in two phases – regional level and State level – and separately for Arts and Science Universities, Engineering Universities, and Universities for Teachers’ Education.
The State government has allocated ₹20 lakhs for organising the fair this year.
