Two more Indian gaur had to be tranquilised and treated after objects discarded by people within reserve forests led to the animals getting entangled in them.

The Forest department said that two Indian gaur, one at S. Kaikatty and another at Sakthi Malai in Kotagiri, had gotten their hooves stuck in two stainless steel vessels. If left untreated, the vessels eventually would cut off circulation to the animal’s hooves and lead to infection, eventually resulting in a slow, painful death, Forest department officials stated. On receiving information about the animals, the Forest department mobilised veterinarians to tranquilise and remove the objects from the animals’ hooves.

Over the last few months, at least 10 Indian gaur have been spotted and treated with discarded waste getting caught around their hooves. The Forest department has once again urged residents to not discard waste in reserve forests.
