A 47-year-old farmer died after a portion of the plastering on the roof of the house collapsed in Odiyathur village near Pallikonda town in Vellore on Saturday.
Police said the deceased was identified as V. Udayakumar, a farmer. He was living with his wife and two children in a decades-old house. Initial inquiry revealed that, along with family members, Udayakumar was sleeping in a small, dilapidated house when a portion of the plastering of the roof peeled off and fell on him. Other family members sustained minor injuries. The incident happened around 1 a.m.
As family members cried for help, neighbours and relatives rushed to the house. They rescued injured persons and shifted them to the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore, where doctors declared the farmer as brought dead. Based on the alert, Pallikonda police inspected the damaged house. Police said strong wind and rain could have weakened the dilapidated house, resulting in the accident. A case was registered and a probe is under way.
