A Class 7 student died of burn injuries after she tried to light a fire in the kitchen of her thatched house at Pennagar village near Arcot town in Ranipet on Saturday.
Police said the deceased has been identified as R. Illavarasi (13), daughter of K. Ravi (43), a farmer, and R. Devi (38). She was studying at Government Higher Secondary School in Kalavai town.
An initial inquiry revealed that as her mother, Devi, was busy with domestic chores in the house, Illavarasi told her mother that she would get the stove ready with firewood. She poured kerosene and set fire to the stove during which her clothes accidentally caught fire.
Devi rushed to rescue Illavarasi as she cried for help. Along with family members and neighbours, they rushed the badly injured victim to the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore, where she died of 65% burn injuries. A case was registered by Vazhapanthal police. A probe is under way.
