Members of Navyandhra Teachers Association on Sunday demanded immediate steps to fill the large number of vacant teacher posts in the District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) and the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).

Addressing an online meeting, the association’s state president K. Harikrishna and general secretary M. Srinivas Rao said that over 90% of regular teacher posts in DIETS and over 80% of positions in SCERT were vacant. They said the government should fill these positions only with qualified candidates. They also demanded rollback of the single teacher schools in the State.

Their other demands included steps to ensure that the State exam papers were modelled similar to NCERT question papers and teachers should be relieved of additional workload.

Citing the findings of Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) and National Achievement Survey (NAS), which show that both government and private schools in the State are lagging behind in educational standards, they attributed it to the changes made in the education system and called for collective efforts to improve the scenario.
