After the Syndicate, the Academic Council of Mangalore University, in its meeting on Friday, approved autonomy to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) College in Udupi.

The Syndicate, highest decision-making body of the university, agreed to grant autonomy to the college in its meeting on June 4.

If the government agreed, MGM College becomes the tenth college to get autonomy under the university.

Now, the university will submit its recommendation for granting autonomy to MGM College to the State government, which will make the final decision on the matter.

Other colleges which were granted autonomy earlier were Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara College, Ujire; School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya; St. Aloysius College, St. Agnes College and St. Ann’s College in Mangaluru; Alva’s College, Moodbidri; Poornaprajna College, Udupi; Vivekananda College of Arts, Science and Commerce, and St. Philomena College in Puttur.

Among them, St. Aloysius College has risen to become a deemed-to-be university.

Eligibility criteria amended

The council approved certain amendments to the eligibility criteria for admission to postgraduate courses in statistics, computer application, biochemistry, botany, and applied botany.

With no takers, there was zero admission of students to the first-year Statistics programme at the university for the academic year 2024-25.

As per the amendment approved, a student who has completed B.Sc with any one of the subjects — statistics, mathematics, computer science, data science, data analytics — as a core/major/optional/main subject and has secured a minimum 45% marks (40% for SC/ST and category I candidates) in such subject is eligible to apply for the post-graduation course in statistics. In addition, the amendment states that candidates who have passed the BCA with mathematics at the pre-university level, and have a minimum of 45% marks (40% for SC/ST and category I candidates) in their degree course, are eligible.

A bridge course at the beginning of the course has to be taken up on algebra and calculus for those candidates who did not undergo those courses at degree level, the amendment said.

Later, the Vice-Chancellor P.L. Dharma told the press that the university will make all efforts to revive the course and to draw students to it. Statistics is also required for those students pursuing chartered accountancy. As there is no permanent faculty in the Statistics Department, the university will hire retired senior professors of the department as guest teachers.

H. Devendrappa, registrar (Evaluation) and Y. Sangappa, finance officer (in-charge) were present.
