Braving incessant rain, family members of a pregnant woman from Alligudem village waded through waist-deep water in a swollen stream, carrying her on their shoulders, before reaching the nearest road point at Bollepalli village in Tadvai mandal of Mulugu district on Wednesday.

According to sources, the pregnant woman experienced labour pain at her house in Alligudem late on Wednesday afternoon.

A forest stream flooded the kutcha road connecting the village with Bollepalli owing to heavy rainfall. Her family members, assisted by some villagers, had to wade through the gushing waters, carrying the pregnant woman on their shoulders, to the other side of the stream, sources added.

Upon reaching the road point, they took her to the Government Area Hospital in Mulugu in an ambulance. Her condition is said to be stable.

The incident has brought the spotlight back on the long-standing demand of tribal people living in several far-flung villages in Telangana’s tribal heartland for all-weather road connectivity.
