Cybercrime police arrest 45 in nationwide crackdown on online fraud

The cybercrime wing of the Cyberabad police have detected 25 cybercrime cases and arrested 45 persons across various States between July 1 and 22.

Of the 45 persons arrested, 17 were linked to trading fraud schemes, while nine others were apprehended for operating an illegal cybercrime call centre that defrauded citizens in India and the United States. All nine accused, natives of West Bengal, were remanded to judicial custody.

The investigation also unearthed several other types of cyber fraud including part-time job scams, matrimony fraud, business fraud, vishing (voice phishing), fake customer care services, and digital arrest scams. Among the 25 cases registered, 10 were related to trading fraud, five to vishing, four to part-time job fraud, and one each to business, matrimony, and digital arrest scams.

As part of the operation, police seized nine laptops, 27 mobile phones, two passbooks, five debit cards, and one credit card used in committing these crimes.

Additionally, Cyberabad Police succeeded in securing 153 refund orders from court in 40 cases, amounting to ₹99.14 lakh, to be returned to the victims.
