The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) is all set to witness a keenly contested electoral battle to the governing committee with multiple contestants remaining in the fray to the key posts after the last day for filing nominations on Thursday.
As many as 74 nominations were filed for the election scheduled for August 15. The last day for withdrawing nominations is July 31.
Out of the nominations of Jagadeesh, Shweta Menon, Raveendran, Joy Mathew, Devan, Anoop Chandran, and Jayan Cherthala to the post of the president, the nomination of Joy Mathew was rejected on scrutiny on the ground that signature was missing from the affidavit. He has submitted nomination to the executive committee though.
Baburaj, Raveendran, Anoop Chandran and Jayan Cherthala are contesting to the post of general secretary. Vinu Mohan, Tini Tom, Jayan Cherthala, Anoop Chandran, Kukku Parameswaran, Raveendran, and Sai Krishna are in contention to the post of treasurer. Jayan Cherthala, Raveendran Lakshmi Priya, Nasser Latheef, and Unni Shivapal are contesting to the post of vice president, and Ansiba, Jayan Cherthala, and Anoop Chandran to the post of joint secretary.
Mohanlal opts out
The field seems to have opened up wide after the incumbent president Mohanlal opted out of the election, as he, reportedly, was keen on being a unanimous choice. Jagadeesh, incidentally, was one of the strongest voices from among the actors in support of the Hema Committee report.
Meanwhile, the actors’ body appeared to be a divided house over whether the members accused of misconduct in the Hema Committee report or cases registered in its wake should contest the election. While a section of the actors found nothing wrong in the accused members contesting, there was also an opinion that it would be ideal if such members stayed away for the betterment of the organisation.
For instance, actor Sarayu observed that the accused members may contest since it was an organisation of just 500-odd members focussed on actors’ welfare. However, actor Anoop Chandran said that such members better stay away and be replaced with those who realised the sanctity of the organisation engaged in welfare and charity activities.
