District Collector Ranjith Singh has informed the farmers that the district had received surplus rainfall in July and the overall storage position was comfortable on Friday.
Speaking at the monthly farmers’ grievance meeting in Collectorate, he said that the district’s average annual rainfall was 829.80 mm and till July (as on date), it had received 463.10 mm against 341 mm, which was 122.10 mm higher. In July, he said that against 36.8 mm (which is the average rainfall), the district had already received 44.46 mm. Thus, he said that farmers’ should use the water for irrigation in a judicious manner and bring out higher yields.
The district had so far registered 2,348 hectares of paddy under cultivation, 5800 ha of horticultural crops, 1,400 ha of vegetables and hill crop varieties accounted for 6785 ha and among others. The fertiliser including urea and complex type was sufficiently stocked.
The farmers’ wanted the encroachments removed, patta issued to the land and roads laid to approaching habitations and the farm land. The Collector instructed the officials to give proper response and not delay in disposing off the petitions.
The farmers’ affiliated with the Uthamapalayam Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam said that with the 18-canal not cleaned up last season, many villages received gutter mixed with the water. In a bid to avoid such mistakes, they pleaded to clean up the channel pathway and also remove the encroachments well ahead of the water release.
