The ₹1650-crore drinking water project has been grounded in the Central Godavari Delta under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), targeting to guarantee the supply of safe drinking water to 66,000 households in the Godavari Eastern and Central Godavari deltas in Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema district.

Nestled between the Bay of Bengal and river Godavari, scores of habitations are struggling to access to safe drinking water due to salinity in groundwater owing to illegal brackish water aquaculture in the Godavari Delta.

“Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) is executing the ₹1650 crore drinking water project to be commissioned by 2027. The project has been grounded in the Central Godavari Delta and nearly 10% of work has been completed,” Razole Jana Sena MLA Deva Varaprasad told The Hindu. In Andhra Pradesh, the MEIL group has executed similar project in Uddanam in Srikakulam district, India’s hotspot for kidney ailments.

Pipelines

“The Konaseema drinking water project will have a 350-kilometre-long pipeline to supply drinking water. The storage tanks will be built in 60 locations. In Antarvedi, at least ₹17.33 crore will be spent for drinking water for the surrounding villages,” Mr. Varaprasad said, claiming that his election promise for safe drinking water would be fulfilled through the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Vasista, one of the branches of the river Godavari, confluences into Bay of Bengal at Antarvedi after flowing down through the Central Godavari Delta.
